Pre-Birthday Reading: Time to Embrace My Inner Empress

Guys, I’m still kind of freaking out about this epic reading I had this week! Let me rant and then I’ll explain.

I always get a little weird around my birthday. As much as I covet the opportunity to start anew, I can never avoid the deep analysis that inevitably comes with turning another year older. I’ll be the first to admit this past year wasn’t my greatest. Sure I had some great opportunities and experiences (I got married! I paid off my OSAP! I went to Paris!), but overall I felt a little lost and stagnant. My purpose didn’t feel clear and I was never quite sure what direction I should be moving in. I’m not one of these people who can just go with the flow, so not knowing where I was going felt paralyzing and suffocating at times. Needless to say, I am ready for a change. A big one!

So in this week’s tarot class, I asked the following:

What does the universe need me to know about the year to come?

Oh man, she had a big message for me guys. I did a clarification spread, which is one of my favourite spreads that the lovely Jayne Marie has taught my class. In this spread you seek to get insight into what something deals with, what it doesn’t deal with, what it means and what purpose it serves. You can learn a lot in four cards.

I pulled three major arcana cards, which are the most significant cards in a reading. They represent what stage you’re at in your life, and to have three in a four-card reading means this is going to be a big year. I better pay attention.

Clarification Spread Outcome

Are you ready for it? Here it goes:

  1. It deals with this: The Empress
  2. It does not deal with this: Queen of Pentacles
  3. It means this: The Magician
  4. It serves this purpose: Judgement

AHHH! I WAS SO EXCITED!!! Let me explain.

Queen of Pentacles

First, let’s talk about what it’s not. This isn’t a year for the Queen of Pentacles. This card symbolizes a stability and security that isn’t about to change. As a Queen, she is an authority figure, and in this suit she is motherly and homely, a woman who will look after you with great generosity.  This is a solid card that shows a lot of hard work and determination has lead to stability and security in your life, not to mention a sense of material and spiritual grounding. But this isn’t what my year is going to look like and I already know that. This is not a time for me to stand still, chill at home and eat bon bons all day. This is a time for me to make some serious changes and take back control of my life.

The Empress

Enter the Empress, one of my favourite cards in the deck. If I could be any card in the deck I would want to be the Empress, and what better time for me to embrace her qualities than now. She is the Earth Mother, the inner wild child, a sensual and sexual goddess who is authentically and fully herself. She is nurturing and kind, and ruled by Venus, the planet of love, the same planet that also rules Libra, my sign. She is not an air sign, however, but a well grounded Earth sign. She’s creative and graceful, representative of harmony and fertility, and she is deeply connected to nature. Beyond this though, she is fully capable of unlocking her potential and manifesting her dreams. In her book Going Beyond the Little White Book, Liz Worth gives this card the motto “go where it is wild.” Ooh, don’t you love that? The Empress is basically everything I want to be right now and guess what?

The Magician

I have everything I already need to be her me. How do I know this? Because the Empress has been hanging out with my pal the Magician. With a wand, a cup, a sword and a pentacle, everything he needs to make his dreams become reality is at his disposal. He doesn’t need anything else. He just needs to look within and get to work, start being creative, and find confidence in knowing that everything he wants is already within reach so long as he takes action. Liz Worth writes that the intention of the Magician is, “I am here to tell you that it is time to be who you are, not who the world expects you to be.”

I have never felt more ready to be who I am. What they say about your 30s is true. Something shifts inside and you realize it is inevitable to be who you truly are, so learn not only to embrace it, but how to turn it into your power.

But there’s a catch. Whatever our Empress (me) chooses to do with her powers (the tools of the Magician), she will be judged. There will be consequences, as there are with all decisions, and there may be judgement by myself or by others. It will be based on the decisions I have made. This is the most literal translation of the Judgement card, but it is hardly the full picture.

The Judgement card to me is a sign of rebirth, an awakening, a card that draws on you to experience deep self-reflection and evaluation and use this to move forward in your life and to let go of what no longer serves you. Liz Worth feels similarly, writing, “Judgement acts more like a calling that we must answer. How we answer that call, and what needs to change as a result, comes after the fact.” She also writes that this card can indicate a pull in a new direction, something “that you didn’t see coming.” I totally feel this.

Sometimes this card is about moving in a completely new direction and learning to forgive yourself for this, to leave the past versions of yourself in the past. In my reading, the card is in a challenge position (upside down) indicating that there is some resistance involves. There will likely be obstacles that make getting or accepting what I want/who I am more challenging. I automatically default to looking at this as it involves my career, but I think this is about a more holistic version of myself. Not just my career, but who I am as a person.

Final thoughts on this reading

I feel incredibly empowered by this reading. My year is going to involve a massive quantity of growth. I will go through a lot this year in order to get here, starting early in my journey with cards III and I and moving to card XX. I will walk almost the full journey and it will be hard and liberating and it will test me, but I think by the end of this year I will know without a doubt who I am, what I represent and what my purpose is, no matter the consequences.

I also found it super interesting that the Empress is card number III, and the Magician is card number I, and I am turning 31! That’s not quite how numerology works, but that doesn’t matter because truly nothing else could be more appropriate.

Also, did you notice the lack of water signs? Good!! I’m soooo done with having too many feels about everything. The pity party is over!

This is my year! There are so many things I want to do professionally and personally and I’m feeling so called to do them now. I can’t wait to truly own the incredible qualities and energies of the Empress and the Magician and make some wild, magic happen for myself this year.

Anyone else loving doing readings before a birthday or a big event? I totally recommend the clarification spread. It’s such a quick way to gather some insight and help you find your focus.
