I was fortunate to be invited to Happy Soul for an Intro to Crystals session with Joey Wargachuk (pictured above with Happy Soul founder and owner Diane Kewley). These sessions are like one-on-one personal crystal shopping experiences that help you find the crystals that might be helpful or healing to you at this time. You also have the opportunity to have all your crystal questions answered, of which I had plenty!
I’ve amassed quite the crystals collection over the years, especially as of late spending so much time in mystic and esoteric shops like this one. I have noticed patterns in what I’m drawn to, the colours and structures that capture my attention, and have intentionally set out to purchase stones that are known to have certain healing properties. At times, I’ve incorporated them into my meditation practice by holding them during my meditations, and my yoga practice by placing them at the top of my mat or wearing a pendant necklace during a practice. However, I have always been a little overwhelmed by them. There is so much to know and each stone is unique.
That’s where Wargachuk comes in. He is deeply connected to the healing powers and vibrations of crystals and loves sharing his knowledge on the subject. His grandmother gifted him with a tarot deck and his first stones when he was a child. He now works as a tarot and crystal reader, a Reiki healer, an instructor and a marketer, offering numerous services and workshops out of Happy Soul.
A Bit About Crystals
Crystals, Wargachuk said, sometimes have a bad reputation in part because many people don’t understand how they work or don’t believe that they have the healing properties believers say they do. Not to mention, some people I know tend to associate crystals with people like Spencer Pratt of Hills notoriety. This doesn’t always look good for the rest of us as his love for crystals was almost parodied on the show.
Full disclosure: I confess I kind of love this video and all its crystal action.
But guess what? You’ve got crystals in your pocket right now.
Crystal quartz is used in everything from cellphones to watches to other electronics to help keep track of time. Their vibrations also contribute to the functionality and circuitry of many other technologies and devices. Scientists have been growing crystals and gemstones such as rubies, sapphires and diamonds in labs to support research and development for a variety of innovations including lasers and LEDs.
“If you’re looking for the thing the bridges magic and advanced technology, it’s always going to be crystals,” Wargachuk said when I visited Happy Soul in the Bloor and Ossington neighbourhood.
Crystals and the Chakras
Some people are more in tune with the vibrations of crystals than others. I have found the more I learn about them the more I too am able to experience their natural vibrations. One way of enhancing one’s connection to the stones is to better understand their unique connection to the chakras. This was one of my key takeaways from my personalized crystals session.
Our bodies have seven energy centres known as the chakras. These chakras are indicated by colours that happen to correspond with crystals as well.
You’ll notice if you go into a store like Happy Soul that carries a variety of crystals and gemstones, they tend to be organized by colour. This is intentional. If you find yourself drawn to a specific colour of stone, you may have an imbalance in one or more of your chakras associated with that colour. If you’re new to working with crystals, this is an important area to pay attention to as it tells you a lot of information in a short amount of time about the connection between your mind, body and soul.
Tip from Joey: When searching for a crystal, hold a different one in each hand and close your eyes. The one that feels lighter is the one that’s more naturally aligned with you.
The illustration on the right from Yoga Journal shows you where in the body each chakra is located.
Chakra and Crystal Colour Code
Crown Chakra: Our higher selves and the Divine; clear and white stones
Third-Eye Chakra: Intuition; dark blue and purple stones
Throat Chakra: Voice and communication; blue stones
Heart Chakra: Love and connection; green and pink stones
Solar Plexus Chakra: Personal power; yellow and gold stones
Sacral Chakra: Creativity and Sexuality; orange and brown stones
Root Chakra: Physical foundation; red and black stones
On the day I went into the shop, I found myself drawn to blue crystals in particular. Wargachuk saw this as me not feeling connected to my higher truth, which is accurate as I’ve been trying to figure out what I stand for these days. I picked up a handful of blue stones to help me move forward and I plan to incorporate them into my meditation practice.
Tip from Joey: Organize your crystals by colour to optimize your crystals and prevent their energies from “fighting” one another.
Chakras were just one area that we covered in our session, but with its connection to yoga I thought it was the perfect part to share with you today.
